Scholten and Baijings

D-CONSTRUCTED / BLUSH - DESIGN IN FULL COLOUR  Scholten & Baijings, 2011http://www.scholtenbaijings.com/#Project

Scholten & Baijings are a design duo that create samples and designs for various different companies and outcomes. I admire their willingness to design for a variety of areas, stretching their skills and ideas to create fresh designs.

This is a way in which I would like to work in the future, collaborating with and working for a plethora of different people and companies to create a wide range of samples and products using various techniques and technologies.

I have already started to work in a similar way by thinking about how my designs can be adapted to different areas(accessories, sculpture).

Growths and Formations

To compliment my developed concept of reflecting the growth of new technologies in design, I have been researching and drawing from visuals of natural growths and crystal formations. I have found that the crystal formations work the best with my original designs as they are quite geometric by nature. I feel that they will also give a contrast to the very regular patterns within the aesthetics of my samples as they grow in an irregular fashion.

I have also started to laser cut some of these shapes from perspex using the colours in my palette.

Final Major Project

For my final major project I have decided to focus my work in more of a sculptural accessories direction as the feedback from my last unit suggested that my way of working would be better suited to this sort of design. This will also allow me to combine the two areas that I am interested in within my work; sculpture and fashion.

I intend to further the research I have undertaken in the previous unit to develop my work under similar themes. This will include researching further into Sci-fi films and paraphernalia, space travel and geometric patterns.

I also intend to carry on using new technologies such as laser cutting and 3D printing, developing my skills in them and to explore the ways in which these technologies are rapidly pushing new design and growing in use in many creative areas. This idea of growth in new technologies within design will become part of my developed concept and therefore I will also research visuals to compliment this such as natural growths, geodes and crystal formations.

My chaplaincy commission will also form part of this unit through the making and installation of the piece.
